Transform Dairy Net (TDN) has shared the webinar recording on calf play in Cow-Calf Contact (CCC) Systems. This session explored calf play across different CCC systems and defined the specific types of play observed in calves. The webinar featured a panel of experts who discussed how play serves as a vital indicator of animal welfare and how different management styles impact these behaviours.
Romane Gillet discussed the play behaviour of cow-contact calves on pasture, highlighting key behavioural patterns observed in CCC systems. Margit Bak Jensen provided a detailed analysis of what defines play behaviour, how to recognise it, and the different types of play exhibited by cattle. She also addressed the motivation behind these behaviours and their relationship to animal welfare standards.
Pernille Kvassheim Olsen outlined the play behaviour of dairy calves in various housing systems, while Anina Vogt investigated the specific effects of weaning on calf play behaviour.
